Chris Paul Ready to Wrap Up NBA Career After Next Season
The end of an era is on the brink for one of the league's most notable and impactful players.
Miami, FL - Chris Paul is already one of the most iconic players and among the greatest point guards in NBA history. He’s second all-time in assists with 12,499. After completing 20 years in the league, it’s no secret that the future Hall of Famer is near the end of the road.
Sports journalist Jemele Hill interviewed Paul at the American Black Film Festival in Miami. In the midst, she asked a serious question: “How much longer do you intend to play?” The way Paul answered may have hinted that he’s ready to hang up the jersey soon.
“At most a year, I just finished my 20th season, which is a blessing in itself. I’ve been in the NBA for more than half of my life. These years you do not get back with your kids and family,” he answered.
Even at this late stage in his career, Paul has shown no sign of a decline in his game. The veteran played in all 82 games this past season, averaged 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and shot 42.7% from the field, 37.7% from three-point range with the San Antonio Spurs.
The iconic point guard provided great leadership and wisdom to the young players on the team, including young prospect Victor Wembanyama.
Paul has accomplished greatness throughout his career but hasn’t won an NBA championship, which takes nothing away.
He’s still a free agent and wants to stay closer to his family, who reside in Los Angeles. There have been reports that the Clippers and Phoenix Suns are interested in a potential reunion.
Along with them, the Milwaukee Bucks, nowhere near Los Angeles, have expressed interest in signing the future Hall of Famer.
If the goal is to compete for a championship and stay close to home, the Clippers are the perfect situation for Paul. It satisfies both aspects, but agreeing on a contract is a different obstacle in itself.
Regardless, wherever Paul signs, fans across the league will appreciate all he’s done for the game of basketball. The veteran point guard will receive praise in cheers from all opposing arenas, appreciating his greatness throughout 21 years.
A farewell tour appears to be set for next season.
